91 • Campo Viejo 2002 Gran Reserva, Rioja $20.
Vibrant deep ruby garnet color is unusual for a Gran Reserva. Aromas of jasmine lotion, cherry pie crust and cocoa follow through on a supple, soft entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with baked spices and mild sandalwood notes. Finishes with a crisp, apple skin, praline, and mineral fade. A harmonious and florid modern styled Gran Reserva that doesn't go over the top; pair with veal and Asian beef dishes. (tasted on Feb-24-2009)
90 • Campo Viejo 2004 Reserva, Rioja $13. Best Buy.
Deep ruby black color. Aromas of cherry pie, jasmine, honey cream and spice follow through on a round entry to a dryish medium body with pencil shaving and charred pepper notes. Finishes with a supple, tangy pomegranate, dried flower, and mineral accented fade. Very nice. (tasted on Feb-24-2009)
89 • Ysios 2004 Reserva, Rioja $30.
Deep garnet color. Black raspberry pie, chocolate covered nuts, honeycomb, and bacon aromas follow through on a supple, round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with pomegranate, roasted yellow pepper, and spice notes. Finishes with a long, meaty berry and roasted beet accented fade. Very tasty; pair with veal chops. (tasted on Feb-24-2009)
89 • Montecillo 2005 Crianza, Rioja $12. Best Buy.
Aromas of mossy earth and mushroom laden tree bark, beeswax, and baked plums and tomatoes follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dryish medium body with cocoa, nut butter, old cedar, and cranberry notes. Finishes with a rounded pickled pepper accented fade. An earthy, somewhat mature classical styled Rioja wine to pair with prime rib and savory pot roasts. (tasted on Feb-24-2009)
88 • Campo Viejo 2005 Crianza, Rioja $10. Best Buy.
Bright ruby black color. Aromas of cocoa, roasted nuts, dried cranberry, and mixed peppercorns follow through on a soft, silky entry to a dryish medium body with tangy ripe apple and cherry notes. Finishes in a lively cedar and spice accented fade with supple tannins. Very nice and classical styled. (tasted on Feb-24-2009)
