93 • Serna Imperial 1999 Gran Reserva, Rioja $39.99.
Deep ruby black color. Aromas of baked black cherries, briny olive, cocoa, and roasted pepper follow through on a supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with excellent mellow depth and balance. Finishes with a long, tangy cherry custard, spice, and sandalwood dissolve. A great example of Rioja that bears forth both ripe fruit and sense of place. (tasted on Jul-15-2010)
92 • Campo Viejo 2005 Reserva, Rioja $13.99. Best Buy.
Deep ruby color. Aromas of blueberries, cranberry, eucalyptus, herbal marinated root vegetables, and earth follow through on a supple entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with very good depth and a drying, powdery tannin, birch bark and mineral accented finish. Nice reserved, yet complex character and style. (tasted on Jul-15-2010)
89 • Campo Viejo 2002 Gran Reserva, Rioja $20.99.
Blackberry, cherry, olive and leather aromas and flavors with excellent depth and vibrancy. Finishes with a long, chewy tannin, tart cranberry finish. Very nice and will be great at the table. Drink up. (tasted on Jul-15-2010)
88 • Campo Viejo 2006 Crianza, Rioja $9.99. Best Buy.
Deep ruby color. Complex aromas of black raspberries, cedar, tobacco, cocoa and spice follow through on a round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with supple depth and finesse. Finishes with a crisp, lively beer skin and plum pit accented fade. A tasty, well made Rioja for sipping or the table. (tasted on Jul-15-2010)
