90 • Chilensis 2008 Reserva, Carmenère, Maule Valley $12. Best Buy.
Inky, deeply saturated blackish-ruby hue. Reserved, youthful, concentrated mineral, lead pencil, and red fruit aromas show good varietal character. A rich entry leads a fleshy, fruit-driven, full-bodied palate. Lengthy, oak-tinged finish with velvety tannins. Has impressive depth of flavor and excellent balance. Will work well with hearty winter dishes. A great value. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
89 • Oveja Negra 2008 Single Vineyard, Carmenère, Maule Valley $17.
Deep, inky ruby-purple hue. Perfumed, youthful sweet-oak aromas are still oak dominant. A rich entry leads a firm, chewy, full-bodied palate with a big core of ripe fruit flavors. Velvety tannins mark the lengthy finish. Not overly varietal, but a big, fruit-driven New World red exhibiting flashy winemaking. Will work well with grilled meats. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
87 • Korta Vineyards 2007 Reserve, Carmenère, Lontue Valley $13.99. Best Buy.
Deep, saturated ruby hue. Ripe, pure black cherry aromas carry a minty sweet-oak accent. A lush entry leads a generous, full-bodied palate with a ripe core of fruit and lean tannins. Carries a subtle herbaceous note through the oak-tinged finish. A big Carmenère to drink with hearty foods. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
87 • Vina La Rosa 2008 La Capitana, Carmenère, Cachapoal Valley $16.99.
Deep, saturated blackish-ruby hue. Pure black fruit aromas carry a prominent, minty sweet-oak accent. A rich entry leads a generous, full-bodied palate with soft, chewy tannins. Fruit acidity lends freshness to the palate but still finishes on a thick, hedonistic note. Try with grilled meats. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
86 • San Rafael 2008 Reserva, Carmenère, Maule Valley $12. Best Buy.
Deep, saturated ruby hue. Smoky, spicy black fruit nose. A firm entry leads a rounded, moderately full-bodied palate with grippy tannins. Ripe, high-toned and varietally correct. A pleasant quaffer to drink in youth. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
86 • Vina La Rosa 2008 La Palma Reserva, Carmenère, Cachapoal Valley $11.99. Best Buy.
Inky blackish-ruby hue. Forceful red cherry and sweet oak aromas carry a varietal herbaceous edge. A rich entry leads a generous, full-bodied palate with firm tannins and bright acidity. Flavorful, mouthfilling finish with complex green notes to the fruit. An interesting style. Try with herbed pork dishes. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
85 • Espiritu de Chile 2007 Carmenére, Central Valley $10.
Deep, saturated ruby-garnet hue. Reserved, peppery, mildly herbaceous nose. A rich entry leads a rounded, moderately full-bodied palate with soft-chewy tannins. Drying, minerally finish. A structured, reserved, French-leaning style. Try with hearty winter dishes. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
85 • Tamaya 2008 Reserva, Carmenère, Limari Valley $14.99.
Saturated inky-purple hue. Perfumed, minty, plummy aromas have a cocoa accent and show lots of depth. A lush entry leads a generous, moderately full-bodied palate with bold flavors. Highly-extracted on a lighter frame. Shows a hint of greenness through the finish. Try with hearty winter foods. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
