87 • Chilensis 2008 Reserva, Merlot, Maule Valley $12. Best Buy.
Deep, saturated ruby hue. Brooding, reserved lead pencil and black fruit nose. A ripe entry leads a rich, full-bodied palate with drying tannins and a nice core of varietal red cherry flavors. Sweet oak pops up on the juicy finish. Shows good varietal character and balance. A good match for lamb and a good value. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
86 • Vina La Rosa 2008 La Capitana, Merlot, Cachapoal Valley $16.99.
Inky blackish-purple hue. Ripe black cherry aromas show good varietal character with an expensive oak accent. A lush entry leads a rounded, full-bodied palate with supple tannins. Velvety, rounded finish with soft acidity. A rich, rounded style to drink in youth. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
85 • San Rafael 2008 Reserva, Merlot, Maule Valley $12.
Dep ruby hue. Ripe cherry and brown spice nose. A lush entry leads a rounded, moderately full-bodied palate with chewy tannins. Ripe, drying finish. Drink now. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
80 • Big Fat Llama 2008 Merlot, Cachapoal Valley $7.99.
Deep ruby-garnet hue. Maturing, high-toned, minty, gamey aromas have an earthy undertone. A lush entry leads a drying, moderately full-bodied palate with bright acidity and grippy tannins. Has a green note to the finish. Drink now. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
