93 • Asaiashokuhin/Higankaku Co., Ltd. 1977 Shaoxing Rice Wine "30 Years Aged Flying Gull Chiew" $571/500 ml.
Deep mahogany color. Aromas of toffeed nuts, dried cherries, dusty spice box follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dry medium-to-full body with notes of fresh spinach leaves, moss, and water chestnuts in support. Finishes with a pleasant accents of aged rice wine vinegar and sea salt. An exotic digestif reminiscent of a fine dry aged sherry. (tasted on Dec-17-2008)
88 • Asaiashokuhin/Higankaku Co., Ltd. Shaoxing Rice Wine "20 Years Aged Flying Gull Chiew" $200/500 ml.
Deep reddish mahogany color. Caramelized roasted nuts, sea salt, kale, and mashed raisin aromas follow through on a very soft entry to a dry medium-to-full body with sautéed spinach, yeasty toasted bread, and light balsamic vinegar notes. Finishes with a long, spinach, nut and kelp fade. Interesting. (tasted on Dec-17-2008)
87 • Asaiashokuhin/Higankaku Co., Ltd. Shaoxing Rice Wine "10 Years Aged Flying Gull Chiew" $47/500 ml.
Rich copper mahogany color. Aromas of salty roasted chestnuts, braised Brussels sprouts, dried Montmorency cherries, beef bouillon, and soy sauce are intriguingly exotic. A very soft, rather flabby entry leads to a bone dry and sour medium body with singed nutskins, bamboo shoot, mossy dirt, spinach and collard green flavors. Finishes with a drying seaweed like fade. Very unusual! (tasted on Dec-17-2008)
