91 • Viu Manent 2007 Reserva, Carmenére, Colchagua Valley $14. Best Buy.
Deep violet color. Lovely aromas of fresh blueberry pie, cassis frosting, pork rind, and menthol follow through on a round, supple entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium body with grilled and marinated pepper notes and a crisp, apple skin, fig, nut and talc-like tannin fade. A tasty wine to serve with grilled pork tenderloins. (tasted on Mar-23-2009)
89 • Yagan 2005 Reserve, Carmenére, Maule Valley $10.99. Best Buy.
Deep amethyst color. Aromas of baked berries, thyme, and dried eucalyptus follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with a touch of toasty cedar and vanilla. Finishes with a crisp, dark praline and spice accented fade with chewy tannins. Pair with lamb or herb crusted steak (tasted on Apr-15-2009)
88 • Espiritu de Chile 2007 Carmenére, Central Valley $11. Best Buy.
Deep garnet color. Bright pencil shaving, pomegranate jelly, tomato and herb aromas follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dryish medium body with balanced, even fruit and wood tones. Finishes with a crisp red apple skin and cedar plank fade. Nice. (tasted on Apr-15-2009)
