France: Rhone: Cote-Rotie

What is Côte-Rôtie?
Côte-Rôtie is simply one of, if not arguably for some the finest red wine in the world. It is made in tiny quantities from impossibly steep vineyards in a small area at the northern limit of the Rhône. The wines are made of Syrah and sometimes contain a dollop of the white grape, Viognier, for a little added perfume. And what a perfume it is—fine Côte-Rôtie can be a shock to the senses with its amazing intensity of bouquet and its inimitable complexity of flavor. Rich and firm, these wines are still often quite generous and though many are drinkable in youth the finest will cellar for decades. The best Côte-Rôtie will be very expensive, but even more problematic for most will simply be finding some to buy!
