98 • Pierre Ferrand Grande Champagne 1972 Vintage Cognac $550.
Deep amber color. Aromas of buttery toffee, floral bath soap, raisins, cola nut, and delicate maple syrup follow through on a rich, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity full body with complex waves of dried fruits, exotic spices, leather, anise, cocoa, dried lavender, and sandalwood. Finishes with a seemingly endless, evolving peppery wood spice finish. Magnificent! (tasted on Mar-25-2009)
95 • Martell Création Grand Extra Cognac.
Deep coper mahogany color. Round aromas of honeyed raisins and nuts follow through on a silky soft entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with prominent acacia honey, mellow baked spices, and dried pear and tropical fruit notes. Finishes in long, brown sugar and orange peel, peppery spice, green tobacco leaf, and astringent nutshell accented fade with a coppery tang. A complex, enigmatic spirit. (tasted on Feb-19-2009)
95 • Pierre Ferrand "Selection des Anges" Cognac $140.
Rich amber color. Deep fruity aromas of golden raisins, pears, and apples drizzled with caramel, flower petals, and spice follow through on a rich, satiny entry to fruity-yet-dry medium-full body with layers of honeyed nuts, creamy cocoa, and spice. Finishes with a long spicy oak and fruit chutney fade. A delicious, smooth, harmonious blend of rounded fruit, wood, and spice flavors made for slow contemplation. (tasted on Mar-25-2009)
92 • Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac.
Deep dark copper color. Warm melted buttery caramel and anise seed aromas follow through on a soft, silky entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with caramelized pear, peach, and apple notes. Finishes in a vibrant peppery spice and praline accented fade with slate minerality. (tasted on Feb-19-2009)
