91 • Dolium 2003 Single Vineyard, Malbec Gran Reserva, Mendoza $65.
Garnet color. Toasty praline, spicy poached apple, and wet clay aromas follow through on a soft entry to a dryish medium body with prune, raisin nut chutney, and dusty spice notes. Finishes with a supple tannin and pomegranate accented fade. A nice, earthy claret style wine to serve with filet mignon. (tasted on Nov-14-2008)
89 • El Guardado 2008 Malbec, Tulum Valley $16.
Garnet violet color. Caramelized roasted nut, mocha, and browned berry pie crust aromas follow through on a supple, silky entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with chocolate mint and baking spice notes. Finishes with a tangy, baked citrus and roasted nutskin fade. (tasted on Nov-14-2008)
88 • Alta Vista 2007 Classic, Malbec, Mendoza $11.99. Best Buy.
Garnet violet color. Dark roasted nuts, praline, pepper, mocha, and baked blackberry aromas follow through on a round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with dried cranberry, blueberry, and spiced nut notes. Finishes with a tart, berry and apple skin and burnt orange fade. An excellent choice with charred flank steak. (tasted on Nov-14-2008)
88 • Santa Ana 2006 Reserve, Malbec, Mendoza $9.99. Best Buy.
Deep garnet with a violet rim. Plum pudding, peach jelly, floral talc and spice aromas follow through on a soft entry to a dryish medium body with blood orange and almond skin accents. Finishes with a crisp, citrus rind, tomato skin, and powdery tannin fade. (tasted on Nov-14-2008)
82 • Dolium 2006 Malbec, Mendoza $13.99.
Roasted coffee bean, sour vegetable bean stew, and blackberry yogurt aromas. A soft, supple entry leads to a dry medium body with dusty berry, cocoa powder and roasted root vegetable flavors. Finishes with quick, rhubarb and talc fade. Odd. (tasted on Nov-14-2008)
