91 • Korta Vineyards 2007 Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Lontue Valley $13.99. Best Buy.
Deep, saturated blackish-ruby hue. Brooding lead pencil and cassis aromas carry a prominent oak accent. A firm entry leads a structured, full-bodied palate with firm tannins and good depth of varietal fruit character. Drying, forceful finish. A great value for such pure Cabernet style. Will develop over the next few years, but drinking well now. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
88 • Chilensis 2008 Reserva, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley $12. Best Buy.
Deep, saturated ruby hue. Ripe, brooding, minty cassis nose. A rich entry leads a drying, full-bodied palate with chewy tannins and solid depth. A youthful, tightly-wound Cab with a bit of astringency on the lengthy finish. Will be better in six- to 12-months' time, but well made and a solid value. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
88 • Vina La Rosa 2008 La Palma Reserva, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cachapoal Valley $11.99. Best Buy.
Saturated blackish-ruby hue. Brooding black fruit and powdered cocoa aromas carry a high-toned, minty accent. A rich entry leads a generous, full-bodied palate with big, chewy tannins and good depth of flavor. Lingering, drying, fruit-driven finish. A big wine with lots of oomph. Good value. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
87 • San Rafael 2007 Private Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley $17.
Deep, saturated ruby-purple hue. Reserved cassis and mineral aromas show good varietal character. A lush entry leads a chewy, full-bodied palate with soft acidity and lots of extraction. Structured, drying finish. A big, thick style. Try with grilled meats. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
85 • San Rafael 2008 Reserva, Cabernet Sauvignon, Maule Valley $12.
Deep garnet hue. Subdued, minerally lead pencil nose. A rich entry leads a drying, moderately full-bodied palate with chewy tannins. Ripe red fruit flavors mark the dusty finish. Drink now. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
83 • Big Fat Llama 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Cachapoal Valley $7.99.
Deep garnet hue. Subdued red berry aromas carry a subtle, earthy edge. A ripe entry leads a rounded, full-bodied palate with soft tannins. Soft, velvety finish. A pleasant quaffer to drink in youth. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
