92 • Alvolo 2003 Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata $29.99. Cellar Selection.
Nearly opaque garnet violet color. Aromas of stewed fruits, pistachios, and coconut shavings follow through on a supple entry to a dryish medium body with tart cherry and roasted nut emerging. Finishes with a dry, earthy fade with chewy tannins. A seriously structured wine to serve with osso bucco and hearty stews. Give this a little time. (tasted on Nov-16-2009)
92 • Corbello 2007 Nero D'Avola, Sicilia Rosso IGT $8.99. Best Buy.
Deep garnet violet color. Very pure aromas of mashed raisins follow through on a round, supple entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with excellent evenness of flavor and a hint of cocoa and peppery spice. Finishes with a smooth, chewy tannin fade. A certain star at the table that should cover a lot of bases. (tasted on Nov-16-2009)
90 • Baccichetto Vittorino 2008 Refosco, Friuli Venezia Giulia $15. Best Buy.
Ruby garnet color. Aromas of chocolate covered currants, green onion skin, and floral plums follow through on a round, plush entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium body with excellent depth and vibrancy. Finishes with a long, tangy raspberry and spice fade. A delicious sipper or table wine to pair with veal parmesan or spicy arrabiata pasta. (tasted on Nov-16-2009)
89 • Giarola 2007 Bardolino Saint Valery, Bardolino $17.99.
Bright ruby color. Mild aromas of chocolate covered raisins have a hint of flower bed and follow through on a round entry to dry-yet-fruity medium body with slate and cedar notes. Finishes with a touch of green herb and peppery spice. An well balanced, appetizing table red to pair with meat and pasta dishes. (tasted on Nov-16-2009)
87 • Cantina Castel Dellangelo 2006 Colli e Sole , Aglianico, Campania IGT $22. Cellar Selection.
Aromas of toasty cedar and pine needle accented a warm forest berry coulis and follow through on a round entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with notes of sandalwood and spice. Finishes with a vert tart blackberry and firm, earthy chewy tannin fade. A big, powerful table wine to serve with boar, venison or other game. Give this a few years in the cellar.
