93 • Magnotta 2004 "Enotrium", Niagara Peninsula $34.89.
Deep ruby color. Bold aromas of wet red clay, tomato and onion skin, and sour cherry chutney follow through on a round, juicy entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body with dried currant, plum pie, and honey notes. Finishes with lively sautéed pepper, hazelnut, and spice fade. A clever, flavorful and earthy claret style wine that will shine with Indian or Thai dishes. (tasted on Mar-18-2009)
87 • Peller Estates 2007 "Family Series", Cabernet-Merlot, British Columbia $11.75. Best Buy.
Aromas of chocolate drizzled pound cake, verbena, acai berry and seared pork fat follow through on a round, satiny entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with dried cherry and raspberry and nutskin notes. Finishes with a crisp, cedar and peppery spice fade. (tasted on Mar-18-2009)
85 • Peller Estates 2007 "Family Series", Cabernet-Merlot, Niagara Peninsula$9.50. Best Buy.
Bright garnet violet color. Aromas of singed berry creme brulee crust, dark roasted nuts and sage follow through on a supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with juicy red berry and cherry fruit, tomato skin, and a peach pit notes. Finishes with a crisp, powdery fruit and nutshell-like tannin fade. Needs meat to round out the tannins. (tasted on Mar-18-2009)
