France: Rhone: Hermitage

What is Hermitage?
The hill of Hermitage is a hefty granite lump that juts steeply into the sky and forces the mighty Rhône River into a big left turn. With a huge slope of southern facing vines, it is one of the most privileged spots for viticulture in the Rhône Valley—and the world. Red Hermitage is made from the rich and hearty Syrah grape and the wines are exotically flavorful though firm and concentrated. It has enjoyed an exceptional reputation for centuries as one of the longest-lived wines of France. The only drawback is that there’s not much to go around, and the very best wines can be quite expensive. Nonetheless, a mature Hermitage is one of the real treats of the wine world.
