USA: U.S. Red Rhone Varietals (Rhone Rangers)
Who in the World are the Rhône Rangers?
The Rhône Rangers are a hearty band of U.S. vintners who have been planting and promoting lesser known varietals from Frances Rhône Valley as opposed to the chocolate and vanilla of the wine worldCabernet and Chardonnay. Instead, they sing the praises of wines such as Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, and Carignane. Syrah and Mourvedre tend to be full-bodied, rich, and flavorful reds while Grenache and Carignane tend to the lighter side of the spectrum. Additionally, we have included Petite Sirah. Although not technically a Rhône varietal (its origins are a matter of dispute), Petite Sirah, like Zinfandel, has become a California original. Often made from plots planted at the turn of the century, Californias best Petite Sirahs often outperform the more hyped (but younger) plantings of Syrah. Rich, tannic, and dense, Petite Sirah is a real mouthful, and offers one of the best values in California wine today.
