Door County
Door County is located in northeastern Wisconsin; on state maps, it can be easily located, as it is the small tip jutting out from the mainland. The Wisconsin Ledge AVA is situated in Door County; this is suitable for grape growing, despite its far northern location, as area vineyards on the eastern slopes of the AVA receive warming breezes from Lake Michigan. Soils are a mix of gravel, sand and clay; of the 3800 acres of land, 320 are planted to vines. There are only three wineries in the area, working primarily with French hybrid varieties such as Marechal Foch, Niagara and Frontenac.
