Who wants to spend more than they have to? No one and certainly not these days. So why is there still the impression that when it comes to wine you have spend a lot to get a lot of pleasure? Sure, there are the great wines of Bordeaux, Tuscany, and Napa that deliver such divine experiences that they have a hypnotic effect on the wallet, but what about wines for more everyday occasions?
The technological advances in wine production have spread to the four corners of the globe and raised the standards of quality and taste for most of the world’s wines. The happy corollary to this new state of affairs is that there is a lot of good wine out there and a correspondingly favorable downward pressure on prices. Our recent seventh annual World Value Wine Challenge results confirmed these facts as we sought out the best tasting wines under $20. We found some remarkable wines at sometimes staggeringly low prices!
Below are links of the top red and white winners spanning four of our 2007 World Value Wine Challenge’s categories: under $8, $10 and under, $15 and under, and $20 and under as well as exceptional value and special award winners. Over 400 international and domestic wines were tasted blind by sommeliers and retailers focused without respect to price or region; in other words, these wines will hold their own with wines two and three times the price. These wines will be great choices for holiday parties and gifts; seek them out and save your money for other holiday treats. Check the individual review pages to find complete producer contact information so your local retailer can help you track them down. Some may be hard to find, but they are definitely worth the search. Happy hunting!
