About Rhone Red Chateauneuf du Pape
The wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are the most famous of the southern Rhone Valley. They are produced in and around the town of the same name, the summer residence of the popes during their exile to Avignon in the 14th century. The reds are rich, ripe, and heady with full alcohol levels and chewy, rustic flavors, usually with a distinct spiciness. Red Châteauneuf can be a blend of up to 13 grape varieties, but the vast majority are Grenache-based with Syrah and Mourvedre in support. Generally, Châteauneuf can be consumed at or near release though the very finest examples will age gracefully for years. There are perhaps no wines that better illustrate the sunny Mediterranean climate of southern France. These are ideal dinner wines, especially paired with pheasant or other game birds, duck breast or aged cheeses.
