Brunello di Montalcino is a classic red wine, produced exclusively from the Sangiovese grape (known locally as Brunello) from vineyards in and around the town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. It is released in its fifth year, after spending at least two years aging in wood and the remainder of the time in the cellar. It is a powerful red, often requiring five to seven years until is is ready to drink. Naturally a wine this rich can age a long time; superior wines from the best producers and vintages can drink well for twenty-five years or longer.
Brunello di Montalcino should be served with wild game (wild boar is famed in this area), steaks, roasts, rich red meats and aged cheeses.
